What is Pilates?
Pilates is an exercise method based on the work of Joseph Pilates. Its focus is on strengthening and stabilizing the core (the abdominals, back and pelvic girdle region), restoring the natural curves of the spine, rebalancing the muscles around the joints, increasing flexibility and improving postural problems.
What are the benefits of Pilates?
Develop longer-leaner muscles without bulk
Improves posture and decreases back pain and other general aches, pains and tension
Increases core strength and stability
Heightens body awareness
Increases flexibility
Complements other methods of exercise and improves performance in sports (golf, skating, skiing, tennis .etc.)
Pilates Matwork
Mat-based classes focus on the development of core stabilizers and joint mobilization using your body weight as resistance. Participants learn to support the body against gravity in various positions, to reduce tension, improve body awareness and gain total-body control. Small props such as weighted balls, stability balls, bands, foam rollers and Pilates rings are also used to enhance awareness and challenge.
With a properly developed core, we are less vulnerable to injury, pain and discomfort. Participants gain awareness of neutral alignment of the body’s joints, and strengthening of deep muscles that support this alignment.
The focus is on quality of movement rather than quantity and involves concentration and the coordination of breath and movement, thereby helping to balance mind and body and challenge you neuromuscularly.
